Early Innovation in Creek Awareness and Restoration
In 1988, Richard Register came up with the idea to mark streetside curbs around Berkeley with “creek critters” to let people know where their waterways flowed: 85% were under the streets and sidewalks, yards and buildings and only two blocks have been liberated since then. Two years later, Alameda County came out with “Don’t Dump – Drains to Bay” curb stenciling program. The concept spread rapidly to other cities and states.
